Dorset packs a lot into one county: chalk downs, the heavy clay of the Blackmore Vale, heathland sands in the east, Purbeck and Portland stone, a coastline that is a World Heritage Site, and busy towns from Bridport to Poole. Good plant hire Dorset jobs depend on matching the machine to that ground and to the rules that come with protected landscapes. 4Counties Hire delivers excavators, dumpers, compaction kit, tractors and implements across the county from our depot near Okehampton, and this guide sets out what to consider in each part of Dorset.

In this guide
Plant hire Dorset: the county in four landscapes
| Landscape | Where | Ground | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chalk downs | Dorset Downs, Cranborne Chase, around Blandford | Chalk with flints | Bucket wear, slippery when wet |
| Blackmore Vale | Sturminster Newton, Gillingham, around Sherborne | Heavy clay | Waterlogging, poor winter access |
| Heath and sands | Wareham, Wimborne, Ferndown, Poole fringes | Sandy, acidic soils | Trench collapse, protected heathland |
| Coast and stone | Purbeck, Portland, West Bay to Lyme Regis | Limestone, coastal clays | Rock, landslips, salt air |
The Blackmore Vale: clay and timing
The Vale is lovely dairy country, but its clay holds water for months. Through a wet winter, field gateways and building plots can become impassable, and a heavy machine will rut the ground badly. If your project is flexible, plan groundworks for the drier months. If it is not, a few things help:
- Lay a stone access road early, before the main machines arrive.
- Use tracked dumpers like the Mechbadger rather than wheeled ones.
- Keep spoil heaps away from trench edges, as wet clay slumps.
- Choose a machine sized to the job, not the biggest available. A 2.5 tonne excavator on clay often makes more progress than a heavier one that keeps getting bogged.
Clay also sticks to buckets and tracks. Budget time at the end of each day for cleaning, and remember that hire equipment needs to come back clean. A Brendon power washer on site makes that easy.
Chalk downland and the arable farms
On the downs, the soil is thin over chalk and full of flints. Arable farms here commonly hire the Valentini 2.3 Leon PTO stone crusher to deal with flints, the Nardi FAST 3m ripper behind the John Deere 6155R for subsoiling, and toppers for grass margins. For digging on chalk, expect more wear on teeth than in loam and allow for spoil bulking. Our full agricultural equipment range covers tractors, implements, loaders, quads and UTVs.
East Dorset heath and towns
Around Wareham, Wimborne and the suburbs of Poole and Bournemouth, sandy soils dig easily but trenches collapse quickly, especially after rain. Have trench support on site before you dig. On built-up plots, zero-tail excavators such as the Sunward SWE 18UF and SWE 25UF keep the machine within its own tracks as it turns, which is invaluable against a fence line or a neighbour’s wall. East Dorset is the far end of our patch, more than a hundred miles from Okehampton, so give us extra notice for deliveries there.
Much of the remaining lowland heath in this part of Dorset is protected for wildlife. If your site borders heathland, check with the landowner and your planning authority about any restrictions on working near it.
Protected landscapes and heritage
Large parts of Dorset sit within designated landscapes: the Dorset National Landscape and Cranborne Chase National Landscape (both formerly AONBs), and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Designation does not stop work, but it can affect planning decisions and conditions, so get your permissions sorted before booking plant. This is general information only, not planning advice.
The county is also rich in archaeology, from barrows on the downs to hillforts like Hambledon Hill. Works affecting a scheduled monument need scheduled monument consent from Historic England. If something unexpected turns up in a trench, stop and seek advice.
Coastal and stone country
Purbeck and Portland are stone landscapes, and digging there can mean meeting limestone close to the surface. A heavier excavator such as the SWE 60UF helps, and if you expect solid rock, ask us and we will tell you what is available or point you in the right direction. Along the west Dorset coast, cliffs are prone to landslips, so keep plant well back from edges. Salt air means rinsing machines down regularly on any seafront job.
Access is its own challenge here. Portland is reached by a single road along the causeway, and Purbeck villages such as Corfe Castle and Worth Matravers sit on narrow lanes with tight corners and stone walls. Tell us about weight limits, low walls and parking on the approach, and consider whether a smaller machine on a compact trailer will reach the site more easily than a large one on a low loader.
Crushing reclaimed stone and concrete on site with a Dragon 400 or 450 crusher can turn demolition waste into usable fill, but check the environmental permit or exemption position for your site first. See our construction equipment range for crushers, excavators and compaction.
Typical Dorset jobs and the kit that suits them
- Village extensions and drainage: Sunward SWE 18UF or SWE 20F, a Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper and a Weber MT SRV 300-II SF slim-foot rammer for narrow trenches.
- Equestrian arenas and yards: a 3.5 tonne excavator for the dig-out, a Weber MT CR 7 for large-area compaction and the Venieri loader for spreading surfaces.
- Farm tracks: a 6 tonne excavator, the Bailey low loader to move it between holdings, and a Dragon crusher if you have hardcore to recycle.
- Patios and paths in coastal towns: a Weber MT CF 2-II Hd plate, the VPR 450 paving roller for block paving and an Altrad Belle Mini Mix 150 for small batches of concrete.
Not sure which combination fits your job? Send us a few photos and a description and we will suggest a package.
Before you book plant in Dorset
- Work out which landscape your site sits in and what that means for the ground.
- Confirm planning, heritage and any landscape-related conditions.
- Check buried services before digging.
- Measure gates and note narrow lanes, weak bridges or soft verges on the approach.
- Make sure operators are trained, as hire is self-drive unless agreed otherwise.
- Arrange insurance for hired-in plant, which is not included in the hire.
Getting plant across Dorset: routes and timing
Dorset is the furthest of our four counties from our depot near Okehampton, so delivery planning matters more here than anywhere else we work. Rough road distances give a feel for it, though the exact route depends on the load and the time of day.
| Area | Approx. distance | Usual route |
|---|---|---|
| Lyme Regis and Bridport | About 60 to 65 miles | A30 to Exeter, then A35 |
| Dorchester and Weymouth | About 80 to 90 miles | A35, then A354 for Weymouth |
| Sherborne and the Blackmore Vale | About 80 to 95 miles | A30 east via Yeovil |
| Blandford and Cranborne Chase | About 95 to 100 miles | A35 then A354, or A30 and A350 |
| Wareham, Wimborne and Poole | About 100 to 110 miles | A35 east |
Same-day delivery is mainly for Devon and Cornwall. For west Dorset, a day or two’s notice usually works. For east Dorset, give us as much notice as possible and send the full list of machines, so we can put everything on one lorry. Summer traffic on the A35 near Bridport and Chideock and on the roads to Weymouth and Swanage can add a lot of time, so early slots are often best in the holiday months.
Collections follow the same logic. Tell us your finish date as soon as you know it, and remember that hire charges run until you have an off-hire reference from us. Telling the driver on the day does not count.
What to have ready on delivery day
- Firm, level ground where the lorry can unload, with no overhead cables above it
- Gates open and any livestock moved out of the way
- A responsible person on site to sign the delivery note and check the machine
- Buried services identified and marked before the machine arrives
- Payment confirmed or a credit account in place
Machines arrive with a full tank and should go back full. Our diesel plant runs on white diesel only.
Seasonal advice for plant hire Dorset jobs
Each of Dorset’s landscapes has a different best season, and planning around it can save days of hire.
Vale clay: summer is king
The Blackmore Vale and the clay around Gillingham and Sturminster Newton are at their most workable from late spring to early autumn. In winter, plan stone access and use lighter tracked machines.
Chalk downs: workable most of the year
Chalk drains well, so downland jobs are often possible through the winter, but churned chalk is slippery and the flinty clay caps on top can be as sticky as the Vale.
Heath and nesting birds
East Dorset’s heaths are home to protected ground-nesting birds, and the bird nesting season generally runs from 1 March to 31 August according to GOV.UK guidance on countryside hedgerows. If your site borders heathland, or the job involves clearing hedges or scrub, plan it outside that window where you can and check with the planning authority. Removing a protected countryside hedgerow needs written notice first.
Harvest and holidays
From July to September, lanes on the downs fill with combines and trailers, and coastal roads fill with visitors. Neither stops a delivery, but both slow it down. For farm customers, harvest is also when the John Deere 6155R, toppers and the Bailey low loader are in most demand, so book those well ahead of the season rather than the week you need them.
Worked example: an equestrian arena in the Blackmore Vale
This is an illustrative scenario, not a real customer. A small livery yard near Sturminster Newton wants a 20m by 40m arena on a gently sloping clay field. The planning permission is in place, and the job is booked for June.
- Strip and stockpile topsoil. A Sunward SWE 35UF strips the topsoil and stockpiles it for landscaping the banks later. A Mechbadger tracked dumper moves it without rutting the field.
- Cut and fill to level. The excavator cuts the high side and fills the low side, with the fill compacted in thin layers using a Weber MT CR 7 reversible plate. Clay compacts poorly if it is too wet, which is why the job is booked for summer.
- Drainage. Herringbone land drains are cut across the base and connected to an outfall. If the outfall is a ditch in a drainage board area, or near a main river, consent may be needed.
- Stone base. Hardcore, possibly crushed on site from an old concrete yard with a Dragon crusher after checking the waste exemption position, is spread and compacted.
- Surface. The Venieri 1.63D pivot loader moves and spreads the surface material, working from the edges so heavier machines stay off the finished base.
A Brendon power washer keeps the lane clean at the end of each day. On clay, a muddy lane is the quickest way to fall out with the neighbours.
How long does a job like this take? It depends heavily on weather, ground and the size of the team, which is why we suggest asking for a weekly and a monthly quote side by side. If it rains hard mid-job, stop moving clay rather than smearing it, and use the time for drainage or edging work instead. Off-hire the heavier machines as soon as the earthworks are done, and keep the loader on for the surfacing.
Hire periods and Flex options for Dorset work
Because transport to Dorset costs more than it does to Devon, the hire period you choose affects the total more than usual. The table sets out when each option makes sense.
| Option | Suits | Dorset example |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | One-off jobs of a day or two | A patio dig-out in Weymouth |
| Weekly | Most domestic and farm jobs | Footings and drainage for a village extension |
| Monthly | Longer projects with the same kit | A barn conversion near Beaminster |
| Long-term rental | Contracts of around four months or more | A housing phase near Gillingham |
| Flex Hire | Varied work across several sites | A landscaper moving between jobs across the county |
Flex Hire is a flat monthly fee for one machine at a time from a tier, with swaps whenever you need them, servicing included and a 10% rebate. Tier 1, covering compact kit and everyday tools, is £795 +VAT and delivery a month. Tier 4, covering everything including 9 tonne excavators and tractors, is £1,495 +VAT and delivery a month.
Low-impact kit for gardens, heath edges and estates
Many Dorset jobs are on lawns, parkland, heath edges or estate grounds where ruts and noise matter. The Tracspider Elektro Joe electric tracked transporter is quiet, zero emission and has low ground pressure, which makes it ideal for moving materials across soft or sensitive ground. The Tracspider 1000kg carrier and the HG 1000 electric dumper do a similar job on bigger sites. For estate and sports ground work, our sports and landscaping range adds compact tractors, aerators and overseeders, and we are the home of Hole in One Rentals for golf course work.
Protecting lawns, parkland and verges
A few habits keep the damage down on soft or valued ground:
- Lay ground protection mats or boards on the route the machines will use most.
- Keep to one route rather than letting every trip find its own line.
- Turn tracked machines gently, in wide arcs, rather than spinning on the spot, which tears turf.
- Strip and set aside turf and topsoil before digging so they go back on top.
- Work in dry spells where you can. The same field can carry a machine in June and not in January.
Finish by reinstating ruts and levelling any spoil before the machines leave. On estates and gardens, how the ground looks afterwards is part of the job.

Frequently asked questions
Do you deliver to Poole and Bournemouth?
We cover Dorset, and east Dorset is the longest run from our depot, so give us as much notice as you can and we will confirm what is possible for your postcode.
What is the best time of year for groundworks in the Blackmore Vale?
Generally late spring to early autumn, when the clay is drier and access is easier. Winter work is possible with good access planning.
Can I hire a tractor and stone crusher for a Dorset arable farm?
Yes. The John Deere 6155R and Valentini 2.3 Leon stone crusher are both available. Ask us about pairing and delivery.
Is plant hire Dorset delivery included in the price?
No. Delivery and collection are quoted separately, based on distance from Okehampton, and we always confirm them before you book.
Do I need consent to work near Dorset heathland?
It depends on the site and its designations. Much of the remaining heath is protected for wildlife, so check with the landowner and the planning authority before you book plant, and avoid the nesting season where possible.
Which digger suits flinty chalk in Dorset?
A 2.5 or 3.5 tonne excavator such as the Sunward SWE 25UF or SWE 35UF has the weight to keep progress steady. Expect more tooth wear than in softer ground and check teeth daily.
Can I keep plant hire Dorset machines for a whole season?
Yes. Monthly hire works for a few months, and long-term rental, typically from around four months, gives agreed rates, servicing and a named contact.
