Plant hire Totnes jobs live or die on access. The South Hams is full of steep plots, sunken lanes with high banks and old town streets where a big lorry simply will not fit, so choosing the right size of machine, and the right way to get it there, matters as much as the machine itself. We deliver mini diggers, tracked dumpers, electric carriers and compaction kit across Totnes, Dartington, Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and the villages in between. WhatsApp us your postcode and a description of the access and we will plan it with you.

Plant hire Totnes: why machine size matters here
Many South Hams lanes are a single vehicle wide between Devon banks, with passing places and few turning points. Add a steep driveway, a hump-backed bridge or a low branch and the size of delivery vehicle becomes the first question, not the last.
In practice, that means a lot of plant hire Totnes bookings are for compact kit that can travel on a smaller trailer. A Sunward SWE 08B micro excavator or SWE 18UF zero tail swing digger, paired with a narrow tracked dumper, will reach plenty of gardens and building plots that a 6 tonne machine never could. It may take a little longer to dig, but it saves days of hand digging or rebuilding a damaged wall.
| Site type | Typical kit | Delivery approach |
|---|---|---|
| Terraced garden with side passage | Sunward SWE 08B, Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper | Small plant trailer, unloaded on the road |
| Cottage extension down a narrow lane | Sunward SWE 18UF, Mechbadger tracked dumper | Plant trailer, meeting point where the lane widens if needed |
| Farm building or open self-build plot | Sunward SWE 35UF or SWE 60UF | Lorry, if the lane allows |
| Eco-build or noise-sensitive site | Tracspider electric carrier, HG 1000 electric dumper | Plant trailer or lorry depending on site |
See the full excavator and dumper range on our construction plant hire page.
Collecting kit yourself: trailers and towing
Some customers prefer to collect and tow kit themselves, especially when the last mile is a lane our vehicles would struggle with. We hire plant trailers for exactly that: the Brian James 9ft plant trailer (9ft × 4ft 4in bed, 2,700kg gross vehicle weight) and the Indespension 10ft plant trailer (10ft × 5ft 6in bed with ramps), plus Ifor Williams 18ft flat bed and tilt bed trailers for larger loads. Details are on our trailer hire page.
Before you tow, check three things:
- Your licence. GOV.UK guidance on towing with a car explains that most car licence holders can now tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass. Check the current rules for your own licence.
- Your vehicle’s towing limit. This is in the handbook or on the VIN plate and is often lower than 3,500kg.
- The combined weight. The machine plus the trailer must stay within the trailer’s gross weight and your vehicle’s limit. Ask us for the machine’s weight and we will tell you which trailer suits it.
Steep South Hams hills put extra strain on brakes and clutches when towing. Take it slowly and secure the machine with proper chains or straps at every tie-down point.
Eco-builds and electric plant
Totnes and Dartington have a long-standing reputation for low-impact and self-build projects: timber frames, straw bale, rammed earth, natural drainage and small off-grid plots. Those projects tend to want quiet, low-emission kit that will not damage the ground.
We have several electric options that suit this kind of work:
- The Tracspider Elektro Joe electric tracked transporter, with a tipping body, low ground pressure and zero exhaust emissions. It is quiet enough to use near neighbours or inside barns and polytunnels.
- The Tracspider 1000kg electric tracked bed carrier for moving materials across soft or sloping ground.
- The HG 1000 electric wheeled dumper with a 1,000kg payload, for firmer surfaces.
- The Altrad Belle electric cement mixer and Mini Mix 150.
- The CRAMER battery range of mowers, strimmers, blowers and a disc cutter.
Pair any of these with a compact Sunward excavator and you can run a small, quiet site with very little disturbance.
Steep plots in the Dart valley
Many building plots around Totnes, Ashprington, Stoke Gabriel and Dittisham sit on steep valley sides. The ground is mostly slate and shale with a thin soil layer, which can be hard digging once you are into the rock. On slopes like these:
- Plan the machine’s route before it arrives, working up and down the slope rather than across it where possible.
- Cut a level working platform first if the digger will be working in one spot for long.
- Keep dumpers lightly loaded on gradients and never turn across a steep slope with a full skip.
- Think about where spoil will go. Steep sites have little room for stockpiles, and spoil heaps near an open trench add load to the sides.
- Check for services before you dig and keep the HSE guidance on safe excavation in mind for anything deep.
If you are not sure a machine is suitable for your gradient, send us photos on WhatsApp. It is the quickest way for us to give a straight answer.
Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe
Further south, the same rules apply but the streets get tighter. Dartmouth, Salcombe and the older parts of Kingsbridge have narrow streets, limited parking and seasonal traffic, so we often plan deliveries for early in the day and outside the busiest summer weeks. We route around the river crossings rather than relying on ferries, so give us a little more notice for sites on the far side of the Dart or the Kingsbridge estuary.
If your job is in a town centre, check whether you need permission to park or unload on the street, and tell us about any restrictions when you book.
How to measure your access before you book
The single most useful thing you can send us for plant hire Totnes jobs is an accurate picture of the route in. Guesses like “it’s a normal lane” lead to the wrong vehicle. Ten minutes with a tape measure avoids that.
- Start at the main road. Note the lane’s narrowest width between banks or walls, and any tight bends, steep pitches or hump-backed bridges. Photos from the driver’s point of view help.
- Check for weight and height limits. Look for signed weight restrictions on bridges and low branches or cables over the lane.
- Find the unloading point. A plant trailer needs firm, fairly level ground long enough for the trailer and towing vehicle plus room to drop ramps. A lorry needs more. A field gateway, yard or wide drive works best.
- Measure from there to the dig. Record the narrowest gap, such as a gate, a garden path, a passage between buildings or the space between a wall and a tree. Measure at ground level and at waist height, because walls lean and hedges bulge.
- Look at the surface. Steps, steep lawns, soft beds, drain covers and septic tanks along the route all change the plan.
- Send it all on WhatsApp. Measurements, photos and a pin of the unloading point. We will match the machine and delivery method to it.
Most plant hire Totnes enquiries that go wrong do so at this stage, so it is worth doing properly even for a small garden job. If the numbers are tight, we would always rather send a smaller machine that definitely fits than a larger one that has to be turned away at the gate.
What happens on delivery day in a narrow lane
Deliveries in the South Hams take a little more choreography than on an open building site. A typical drop-off goes like this:
- We agree a time, often early in the morning, to avoid school runs, farm traffic and visitors in summer.
- You or someone you trust meets the driver at the agreed point, ideally having checked that nobody has parked across the gateway.
- If the lane is single-track, the driver may need a few minutes of stopped traffic while unloading. A second person at the end of the lane can warn oncoming drivers.
- The driver unloads and, where agreed, tracks the machine to the working area. On lawns and soft ground, have boards ready for the route.
- You walk round the machine together, check its condition and fuel, and go through the controls.
Collection works the same way in reverse. Have the machine clean, fuelled and parked where it can be loaded safely, and confirm off-hire with us first.
Planning a South Hams self-build: a timeline
Self-builders around Totnes often juggle groundworks with a day job. Mapping out when you need each machine means you only pay for kit while you are actually using it.
| Stage | Typical kit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Site clearance and access | Sunward SWE 18UF or SWE 25UF, GL&D chipper for scrub | Keep the access route usable for deliveries all through the build |
| Foundations and drainage | Sunward SWE 35UF where access allows, tracked dumper, Weber MT rammer for trench bottoms | Have building control inspections booked before you pour |
| Services in | Compact excavator or Mak Brent trencher | Water, power and data in one trench where separation allows |
| Materials handling during the build | Tracspider electric carrier, Dragon LT1000 dumpy bag lifter | Quiet, low ground pressure, good on slopes |
| Landscaping and finishing | Micro digger, plate compactor, VPR 450 paving roller | Strip-stored topsoil goes back last |
On a long self-build where you need different machines on and off for months, Flex Hire can make more sense than separate hires: one flat monthly fee for a tier of equipment, swaps whenever the stage changes, and servicing included. Tier 1 starts at £795 +VAT and delivery per month.
Devon banks, hedges and boundaries
The high banks that line South Hams lanes are part of the landscape, and many are protected. If your project involves widening an entrance or removing part of a hedge bank to get machinery in, check with South Hams District Council first. Removing a countryside hedgerow can need prior notice to the council, and you must avoid harming nesting birds. Check the current guidance before any work.
Inside a garden, old stone and earth walls can be less stable than they look. Keep machines and spoil heaps back from the base of a wall, and do not dig alongside one without thinking about what holds it up. If a wall is shared with a neighbour, the Party Wall Act may apply to deeper excavation nearby.
What affects the cost of plant hire in Totnes
We do not publish prices; WhatsApp us for a current quote. These are the main factors that shape plant hire Totnes quotes:
- Distance and delivery method. Transport is priced by distance from our depot near Okehampton. A machine that travels on a plant trailer usually costs less to deliver than one needing a lorry.
- Number of trips. Grouping a digger, dumper and plate into one delivery keeps transport down. Separate deliveries add up quickly over South Hams distances.
- Hire length. Weekly rates are better value than daily, and monthly better again.
- Access time. Very difficult drop-offs may need a meeting point or a second visit, which we will discuss with you in advance.
- Weekend use and extensions. Hire runs continuously and weekend use may carry a charge. Extend before the end date rather than after.
- Damage and cleaning. Return the machine clean and undamaged. Slate chippings and mud left in tracks can mean a cleaning charge.
- Insurance. Not included in the hire. You are responsible for the machine from delivery until collection, so if your existing policy does not cover hired-in plant, ask us about insurance4plant.co.uk.
Worked example: a new drain run at a valley-side cottage
An illustrative scenario rather than a real job: a stone cottage on the slopes above the Dart, reached by a single-track lane, needs 25 metres of new foul drain from the house to a connection point at the bottom of the garden, with a gravel path reinstated over the top.
- Machine choice. The garden is reached through a gate just over a metre wide, so a Sunward SWE 08B micro excavator is the right tool. A Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper moves pipe bedding stone down and spoil back up.
- Delivery. Both machines travel on one plant trailer and unload in the lane-side parking bay, then track in through the gate on boards across the lawn.
- Digging. The micro digger works backwards down the slope so it is always standing on undisturbed ground. In shaley ground, expect slower progress once below the topsoil.
- Pipe laying. Drain falls and bedding must meet building regulations, so agree the specification with building control or your builder first.
- Backfill and path. Backfill in layers and compact with a Weber MT CF 1-III Hd plate or the SRV 300-II SF slim-foot rammer in the trench, then lay the path sub-base and gravel.
A job like this often fits into a single week of hire. The time-consuming parts are usually the connection and the inspection, so book those before the machine arrives.
Timing plant hire around the South Hams year
The South Hams changes character through the year, and that affects when jobs are easiest:
- Autumn and winter: quieter lanes and fewer visitors make deliveries easier, especially in Dartmouth, Salcombe and the coastal villages. Expect wet ground and short days.
- Spring: the ground dries and demand for compact diggers rises sharply. Book a week or two ahead for the most popular sizes.
- Summer: the driest ground for digging, but holiday traffic makes narrow lanes slow. Plan early-morning deliveries and avoid changeover days near holiday lets where you can.
On farmland, hedges covered by the hedgerow management rules cannot be cut between 1 March and 31 August, so plan any trimming back for delivery access in autumn or winter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest digger you hire?
The Sunward SWE 08B, at around 0.8 tonnes. It is designed for confined access and small projects, and it is the usual choice for tight South Hams gardens.
Can I tow a mini digger with my car?
Possibly, if your licence, your vehicle’s towing limit and the combined weight of machine and trailer all allow it. Ask us for exact weights before you plan it.
Is electric plant powerful enough for real work?
For moving materials, yes. The Tracspider carriers and HG 1000 dumper handle loads of up to 1,000kg. Digging is still done with a diesel excavator, but you can keep everything else on site electric.
Do you deliver to Dartmouth and Salcombe?
Yes. We cover the whole South Hams. Give us extra notice and access details for town centre or waterfront sites.
Can you deliver to the other side of the Dart without using the ferries?
Yes. We route by road, which can mean a longer journey for sites around Kingswear or the east bank. Give us a little extra notice so we can plan it.
Will an electric carrier manage a steep South Hams garden?
Tracked electric carriers are designed for slopes and soft ground, but every site is different. Keep loads modest on steep gradients, travel straight up and down, and send us photos so we can advise.
How long should I hire a micro digger for a garden patio?
For a typical patio with good preparation, a few days to a week is common. Allow more time if you are digging into slate, which is slower going with a small machine.
