Plant hire Newton Abbot customers tend to come from three directions: builders and groundworkers on the new housing around the town, businesses on the industrial estates such as Heathfield, and organisers running outdoor events across Teignbridge. We deliver to all three from our Okehampton depot, about 40 miles away via the A30 and A38. This guide covers the right kit for each, the local ground, and how to keep hire costs under control on longer projects.

Plant hire Newton Abbot: groundworks and housing

Newton Abbot and the surrounding towns have seen a lot of new housing, extensions and self-build plots in recent years. That means steady demand for groundworks kit, often for weeks at a time.

Ground conditions around Newton Abbot

The Teign valley and the Bovey Basin to the north of town are known for their ball clay, which has been dug commercially around Kingsteignton, Chudleigh Knighton and Heathfield for a very long time. You will not be digging the pure stuff on a house plot, but heavy, sticky clay soils are common in the area.

  • Clay sticks. Buckets clog and tracks pack up. Allow extra time and clean tracks before the machine goes on the road.
  • Clay holds water. Trenches can fill after rain, and soakaways often do not work. Plan drainage with that in mind.
  • Clay softens. Wet clay loses strength, so keep spoil and plant back from trench edges and follow HSE’s excavation guidance.
  • Clay moves. Foundation depths on clay are often set by building control or an engineer to account for shrink and swell, especially near trees.

Towards the river, the ground can be softer and wetter, and closer to Dartmoor in the west of Teignbridge you will meet harder rock.

Sites near the Teign and the Lemon

The River Lemon runs through the middle of Newton Abbot into the Teign, which becomes tidal as it widens towards Teignmouth. Low-lying land along both can be wet for long periods and may flood. If you are working close to a main river or a flood defence, you may need a flood risk activity permit from the Environment Agency, and the distances that trigger one are greater where the river is tidal. Check the current GOV.UK guidance well before your start date. On low ground, also expect a high water table, which can flood trenches and make soakaways ineffective.

Industrial estates and commercial units

Heathfield, on the A38 near Bovey Tracey, and the estates around Newton Abbot and Kingsteignton are home to warehouses, trade counters and manufacturing units. Our warehouse and cleaning equipment is all electric, so it works indoors without fumes.

Material handling

  • EP F4 electric pump truck, up to 2,000kg
  • EP ESL 122 electric pallet stacker, 1,200kg, racking to 5m
  • EP EFL 253 electric forklift, 2,500kg
  • CESAB B420 electric forklift, 2,000kg with side-shift

Access and cleaning

The Sunward 0807DC scissor lift gives an 8m platform height for racking installs, lighting and maintenance. For floors, the Eureka E50 ride-on and E36 walk-behind scrubbers handle large areas, and the Big Brute vacuum clears dust after fit-outs. Forklift and powered access operators need suitable training, so check before the hire starts.

A typical fit-out sequence

On a unit fit-out, the kit tends to be needed in a set order. The scissor lift comes first for lighting, services and high-level work while the floor is clear. Racking goes in next, again using the scissor lift, then the forklift or stacker loads stock once the racking is signed off. The scrubber and vacuum finish the job before handover. Booking each item for its own window, rather than having everything on site for the whole job, saves money and keeps the floor clear for the trades.

Events at the racecourse and across Teignbridge

Newton Abbot Racecourse and the showgrounds, farms and estates around Teignbridge host shows, weddings, markets and festivals through the year. Our events equipment covers the practical side:

  • Marquee heating. Airrex indirect diesel heaters keep fumes out of the tent. As a guide, the 200i suits tents up to about 200m², the 300i up to about 500m², and the 800i suits large event structures.
  • Power. The Zenessis 25kVA 3-phase towable genset runs lighting, catering and PA. Other sizes are available, so tell us your total load.
  • Site vehicles. CORVUS diesel and AODES 650 UTVs move crew and kit across grass without the damage a van causes.
  • Clean-up. The Brendon 35KPE power washer cleans hard standing and kit afterwards.

Send us your marquee dimensions, event dates and power needs, and we will put together a package.

Racecourse and showground events tend to need more than a single wedding: several marquees, catering units spread across the site, and crews moving kit for days before and after. In that case, think about heating and power zone by zone rather than as one big total, and allow for set-up and break-down days in the hire period, not just the event itself. UTVs earn their keep on these sites, moving barriers, signage and supplies across grass without churning it up for the public.

Getting kit to Newton Abbot

From Okehampton we run along the A30 to Exeter, then down the A38, picking up the A380 for Newton Abbot itself. Heathfield sits right beside the A38, which makes it one of the easier sites to reach. We also cover Kingsteignton, Bovey Tracey, Teignmouth, Dawlish and Ashburton.

For plant hire Newton Abbot deliveries to new-build sites, tell us the plot number and the site office contact as well as the postcode, because estate roads under construction are often not on maps yet. For farms and events in the countryside around the town, a map pin of the field gate saves a lot of phone calls on the day.

  1. Book 24 to 48 hours ahead, earlier for event weekends.
  2. Give us the site postcode, access details and where the lorry can unload.
  3. On new-build sites, tell us about the site entrance, any traffic management and who will sign for the delivery.
  4. For events, confirm access times and the ground conditions for the delivery vehicle.

Keeping costs down on longer projects

Housing and commercial jobs often run for months. Weekly hire suits short spells, but for longer work there are better options. Flex Hire gives you one flat monthly fee and lets you swap machines whenever the job changes, with servicing included, a 10% rebate and no long-term contract. Tier 2, which adds crushers and excavators, is £895 +VAT and delivery per month. Long-term rental gives monthly rates with on-site servicing. For several machines at once, use our contact form for a tailored proposal.

Paperwork, insurance and services

A few things catch people out on Teignbridge jobs, particularly self-builders hiring plant for the first time.

  • Insurance is not automatically included. Many contractors’ policies cover hired-in plant, but check the wording. If you need cover, we refer customers to our partner insurance4plant.co.uk.
  • Find buried services before you dig. New estates have fresh utility runs and older plots can have unrecorded ones. HSE’s guidance on underground services sets out the steps.
  • Training. Hire is self-drive unless otherwise agreed. Make sure every operator is trained and competent for the machine.
  • Payment and sign-off. Have payment or a credit account sorted before delivery, and a named person ready to sign for the kit.
  • Off-hire promptly. Hire runs until off-hire is confirmed with us, including weekends.

A self-build plot: groundworks sequence and hire plan

Self-builders around Newton Abbot often ask what they need and when. Here is an illustrative plan for a single detached house on a sloping plot with clay soil, not a real customer, showing how the hire can be staged so you are not paying for machines that are standing still.

Clay-specific tips

  • Protect the formation. Once foundation trenches are dug in clay, get them inspected and concreted quickly. Rain softens the bottom and may mean digging deeper.
  • Keep haul routes firm. A stone haul road across a clay plot keeps the dumper and delivery lorries moving in wet weather.
  • Separate topsoil. Stockpile topsoil away from the build so it can go back on the garden.
  • Watch the trees. Foundation depth near trees on shrinkable clay is set by your engineer or building control, so check before you dig.

If the build will run for many months, a staged plan like this can fit neatly into Flex Hire, swapping machines as you move from stage to stage under one monthly fee.

Rubble, spoil and waste on housing sites

Groundworks produce a lot of material: topsoil, clay subsoil, old hardcore and sometimes demolition rubble. Handling it well saves money and keeps you on the right side of the rules.

  1. Plan the volumes. Dug material bulks up once it leaves the ground, so it takes up more space in a lorry or skip than it did in the trench.
  2. Reuse on site where you can. Clean subsoil can often be used for landscaping, and crushed concrete or brick for sub-base or fill. Our Dragon 400 and 450 tracked crushers and the CR400 concrete crusher make that practical on bigger plots.
  3. Check whether you need a waste exemption. Crushing waste and reusing it can need a registered exemption or a permit depending on the activity and quantity. The GOV.UK waste exemption guides explain the options. Check the current guidance, as this is general information only.
  4. Use a registered carrier for anything leaving site. You have a duty of care to make sure waste goes to the right place, so keep your waste transfer notes.
  5. Keep contaminated material separate. Anything oily, mixed or suspect should not go through the crusher or into general fill.

Events: a planning timeline for Teignbridge shows and weddings

Outdoor events around Newton Abbot run to fixed dates, so late changes are harder to absorb than on a building site. Working back from the event day helps.

  • Two to three months before: confirm the marquee size and layout with your marquee supplier, and list everything that needs power: lighting, catering, PA, bars and heaters.
  • Six weeks before: send us the marquee dimensions, event dates and your power list. We will suggest the right Airrex heater size and generator, and whether you need UTVs for moving kit around the site.
  • Two weeks before: confirm delivery access for the lorry. Grass fields can be soft in spring and autumn, so agree a firm route and unloading spot with the landowner.
  • Delivery day: position the generator and heater as your electrician and marquee supplier advise, with exhaust and fuel away from the tent and from public areas.
  • During the event: make sure someone knows how to refuel safely and check the equipment, and keep fuel stored away from heat and guests.
  • Afterwards: off-hire promptly and leave everything accessible for collection.

Use a competent electrician to connect the generator to your distribution and equipment. That is especially important outdoors, where damp conditions increase the risks.

Worked example: a marquee wedding near Newton Abbot

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real customer. A couple are holding an October wedding on a farm a few miles outside Newton Abbot, in a 12m by 24m marquee with a catering tent alongside.

Heating

The main marquee is 288 square metres. As a guide, the Airrex 200i suits tents up to about 200m², the 300i medium marquees up to about 500m², and the 800i large event structures. The 300i is the natural fit here, with its ducted output keeping heat flowing into the tent while the combustion stays outside. Indirect heating matters at a wedding: guests get warm air without fumes inside the marquee.

Power

Lighting, a band, the bar and the caterer’s equipment all need power. The Zenessis 25kVA 3-phase towable genset suits many events of this size, but the caterer’s ovens and the band’s PA can add up quickly. The couple’s electrician adds up the loads in kVA before booking, and if they exceed what one unit can supply, other generator sizes are available.

Getting around

The marquee is a few hundred metres from the farmyard across grass. A CORVUS diesel UTV moves tables, drinks and kit from the yard without leaving van ruts across the field, and the AODES UTV 650 handles quicker runs.

Booking everything together means one delivery, one point of contact and kit that arrives in time for the marquee crew. For plant hire Newton Abbot events like this, earlier enquiries give the best choice, especially on summer weekends.

Frequently asked questions

Can you supply a whole groundworks package in Newton Abbot?

Yes. We can supply an excavator, dumper, compaction kit and mixer together. Send details through our contact form for a tailored proposal.

What heater do I need for a marquee at the racecourse?

It depends on the floor area. Send us the marquee dimensions and we will recommend the right Airrex model.

Do you hire forklifts to Heathfield businesses short-term?

Yes. Daily, weekly and monthly hire are all available, subject to availability.

How much notice do I need to cancel a hire?

Cancellation is free with more than 72 hours’ notice. Shorter notice may incur a charge based on the first day’s hire, as set out in our terms and conditions, so confirm event and site dates as early as you can.

What size generator do I need for a marquee event?

Add up the power needed by lighting, catering, PA and anything else in kVA, then tell us the total. The Zenessis 25kVA 3-phase genset suits many events, and other sizes are available for bigger loads. Use a competent electrician to connect it.

Can I crush concrete on my self-build plot?

Often, yes, with one of our Dragon crushers, as long as the material is clean. Depending on the quantity and use, you may need a waste exemption or permit, so check the GOV.UK guidance first.

Do you deliver plant hire Newton Abbot kit to Teignmouth and Dawlish?

Yes. We cover the whole of Teignbridge, including the coastal towns. Tell us about access and parking, as some coastal streets are narrow and busy in summer.
