Plant hire Penzance customers get the same fleet we deliver across Devon and Cornwall: Sunward mini and midi excavators, dumpers, compaction kit, telehandlers, tractors, crushers, trailers and mobile storage. Penzance and West Penwith sit at the far end of our delivery area, so the key is planning. Tell us the machine, your postcode and your dates a few days ahead, and we will confirm availability and a delivery day that works.

This guide covers getting kit to the far west, the ground and weather you will be working in, and the right machines for typical jobs from Newlyn to St Just, Marazion and Hayle.

Getting plant from Okehampton to Penzance

Penzance is roughly 85 miles from our depot near Okehampton, almost all of it down the A30 past Bodmin, Redruth and Camborne. That is a good road for a lorry, but it is a long round trip, and the last few miles to many West Penwith sites are on narrow lanes.

Because of the distance, do not count on same-day delivery to Penzance. Ask us about lead times when you enquire. Most of the time a little notice is all it takes.

  • Book a few days ahead. It lets us fit your delivery into a planned run west rather than a dedicated trip.
  • Group machines together. A digger, dumper and plate on one lorry is one delivery and one collection.
  • Give us exact access details. Lane widths, low bridges, gate widths, turning space and any weight limits on the way in.
  • Agree the collection date early. Hire runs until the machine is off-hired, and a far-west collection has to be scheduled.
  • Consider a longer hire. On distant sites, keeping a machine for the whole job is usually better than repeated short hires.

Delivery and collection are charged separately from the hire and depend on distance. We will confirm the cost before you commit.

Ground conditions around Penzance and West Penwith

The far west is not like mid Devon, and the ground affects which machine and bucket you need.

Granite

Much of West Penwith, from Land’s End across to St Just, Zennor and the moors above, sits on granite. Expect shallow, stony soils over weathered granite, sometimes soft and gritty, sometimes solid rock close to the surface. Excavation can hit large boulders that a mini digger will struggle to move, so the right machine size matters.

Killas and greenstone

Around Penzance, Newlyn, Marazion and towards Hayle, much of the ground is killas, the local name for slates and shales, with harder greenstone in places. Killas digs reasonably well but can be broken and blocky, and the clay it weathers to gets sticky in wet weather.

Mining legacy

The St Just and Pendeen area is old mining country, and parts of the wider district carry a history of shafts and workings. If you are digging footings or foundations, your engineer or conveyancer may already have a mining search for the property. Follow their advice, and stop work if you find unexpected voids.

Practical effects

  • Stony ground wears buckets and teeth faster. Tell us what you expect to hit.
  • Rock breaking needs a breaker attachment. Ask us what is available or we will point you in the right direction.
  • Thin topsoil over granite is precious on gardens and smallholdings, so strip and keep it separately.
  • Stones turned up in fields can be crushed on site with a PTO stone crusher rather than carted away.

Narrow lanes, Cornish hedges and site access

West Cornwall lanes are often single track, enclosed by Cornish hedges: stone-faced earth banks, often topped with shrubs and trees. They are tight, solid and unforgiving of a wide machine or lorry.

Before a delivery we need to know:

  1. The narrowest point on the lane, and whether a lorry can turn at the end.
  2. The gateway width into the field or site, and whether the gate posts are stone.
  3. Whether the machine needs to go down steps, through a garden or along a coastal path.
  4. Where it can be unloaded safely if the lorry cannot reach the site itself.

For tight access, compact tracked machines are the answer. The Sunward SWE 08B micro excavator fits through narrow gaps, and the Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper and the Tracspider electric carrier go where a wheelbarrow does. Zero-tail-swing models such as the SWE 18UF and SWE 25UF work alongside hedges without the counterweight swinging into them.

Cornish hedge repairs

Repairing or rebuilding a collapsed Cornish hedge is skilled hand work, but machines help with moving stone and soil. A mini digger with a grab or bucket can lift heavier stones and rebuild the earth core, and a tracked dumper brings material along the line of the hedge.

Hedges on farmland are protected. Removing a countryside hedgerow can need a hedgerow removal notice from the local planning authority, and there are rules on when farmland hedges can be cut. See the GOV.UK guidance on countryside hedgerows and the hedgerow cutting and trimming rules, and check before you start. This is general information, not legal advice.

Farms and smallholdings in West Penwith

The far west has small, stone-walled fields, dairy and beef farms, early vegetable and flower growing, and a lot of smallholdings. Our agricultural machinery hire range covers most seasonal jobs.

  • John Deere 6155R tractor (155HP, 4WD) for heavy field work and running PTO implements.
  • Valentini 2.3 Leon PTO stone crusher for stony fields, crushing stones into the soil rather than picking them.
  • Nardi FAST 3m ripper for breaking up compacted ground.
  • SaMASZ Mammut 2.8m flail topper and Del Moriano 1.8m PTO topper for pasture, rushes and rough grass.
  • Venieri 1.63D pivot loader (1,850kg tip load) for yard work, feeding and moving bales.
  • AODES quads and UTVs, CORVUS UTV for stock checking and moving around steep, wet ground.
  • Bailey 10-ton low loader trailer (6m × 2.5m deck) for moving machinery between holdings.
  • Zenessis 25kVA generator and PTO gensets for power at remote barns.

Small fields and narrow gateways mean the 3m and 2.8m implements may not suit every holding. Measure your gateways and talk to us about the right width.

Holiday properties and refurbishments

Penzance, Mousehole, Marazion and the coast around St Ives Bay have a high number of second homes and holiday lets. Refurbishment work tends to be squeezed into the quieter months between bookings, with tight deadlines and limited space.

Mobile storage

The Hiway Storage BV126 trailer is exclusive to 4Counties Hire. It is 12ft × 6ft × 7ft, lockable and weatherproof, with a rear ramp, GPS tracking and tamper-evident seals. We site it on your drive and move it ourselves, so no towbar is needed, and no planning permission is needed for it on a drive.

It gives you somewhere secure to keep furniture and fittings out of the way while work goes on. We can also supply packing blankets, boxes, tape, sack barrows and tie straps.

See our trailer hire page.

Quiet, low-impact kit

Where neighbours, guests or narrow streets are an issue, electric machines help. The Tracspider Elektro Joe tracked carrier and the HG 1000 electric dumper are quiet and produce no exhaust, which suits enclosed courtyards and terraces.

Cleaning down

The Brendon 35KPE mobile power washer handles patios, slipways, render and yards before a property goes back on the market or into the season.

Coastal weather and salt: looking after hired plant

Penzance faces the Atlantic weather systems first. Winters are mild but often wet and windy, and salt spray reaches well inland on exposed sites.

  • Wash machines down regularly when working near the shore, especially undercarriages and hydraulic rams.
  • Park sensibly. Keep machines off beaches and slipways at the end of the day and above the tide line at all times.
  • Watch the wind when lifting with a telehandler. Check the operator’s manual for wind limits and stop when conditions exceed them.
  • Protect excavations. Heavy rain can soften trench sides fast. Follow the HSE guidance on excavation safety.
  • Plan around the season. Summer traffic on the A30 and around Penzance can slow deliveries, and many holiday-let jobs fit better between October and Easter.

Longer hires, Flex Hire and long-term rental for distant sites

For plant hire Penzance customers, and any site at the far end of the county, the hire period often matters more than the daily rate. Paying for delivery and collection twice because a machine went back too early is a common, avoidable cost.

Weekly and monthly hire

Weekly hire is our most popular option. For jobs longer than a few weeks, monthly hire usually makes more sense.

Long-term rental

Our long-term rental option gives you monthly rates with on-site servicing included, which matters when the depot is a long drive away.

Flex Hire

Flex Hire is one flat monthly fee with the option to swap machines as the job changes, servicing included and no long-term contract. There are four tiers:

TierCoversMonthly fee
Tier 1Compact kit and everyday tools£795 +VAT and delivery
Tier 2Adds crushers and excavators£895 +VAT and delivery
Tier 3Adds large excavators and forklifts£995 +VAT and delivery
Tier 4All tiers, including 9T excavators and tractors£1,495 +VAT and delivery

Flex Hire also includes a 10% rebate. For a builder or groundworker based in West Cornwall, it can mean having the right machine on site all year without owning it.

Planning a plant hire Penzance job: a simple timeline

Because the far west is a long run from the depot, a little planning saves money and stress. Here is a timeline that works for most jobs.

  1. Two to three weeks before. Work out the scope: what needs digging, moving, lifting or storing. Measure access and gateways. Get any permissions, mining or ground reports and service drawings sorted.
  2. One to two weeks before. WhatsApp us the job details. We will suggest a package and give you a current quote, and pencil in a delivery day.
  3. A few days before. Confirm the date, site contact and unloading point. Arrange insurance cover and make sure the operator is trained on the machines.
  4. Delivery day. Have someone on site to meet the lorry, check the machine over and sign for it. Ask for a quick run-through if you have not used that model before.
  5. During the hire. Carry out daily checks, wash down in salty conditions and report any faults straight away.
  6. Before collection. Call or WhatsApp to off-hire as soon as you are finished, and leave the machine somewhere the lorry can reach.

Worked examples from the far west

These are illustrations to show how we would think about a job, not real customers or quotes.

A drainage run at a farmhouse near St Just

A 40m soakaway pipe run across a field, through stony ground over granite, with a narrow lane and a stone gateway about 2.4m wide. A Sunward SWE 25UF digs with enough force for the stone and fits the gateway, with a Mechbadger tracked dumper moving spoil. A week’s hire, delivered and collected on a single planned run.

A terrace garden in Newlyn

A steep back garden reached only by steps from the street. Machines must be small enough to carry or track up, so a Sunward SWE 08B and a Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper are the choice, with a Weber MT CF 1 plate for the patio base. Plan the unloading point with the lorry driver in advance.

A holiday let refurbishment in Marazion

A full internal refit between November and March. A Hiway Storage trailer on the drive holds furniture, and the Tracspider moves rubble out through the garden quietly. A monthly hire or Flex Hire covers the whole winter.

Safety, competence and insurance

All our hire is self-drive unless agreed otherwise, so whoever operates the machine needs suitable training or certification. Before digging anywhere, check for buried services using LinesearchbeforeUdig and any plans you hold. Rural properties often have private water pipes, cables and septic tank pipework that do not appear on utility records.

Insurance is not automatically included with hire. We refer customers to insurance4plant.co.uk for hired-in plant cover. Arrange it before the machine arrives.

What to send us when you book

We do not take online bookings. WhatsApp or call us with:

  • The machine you want, or a description of the job.
  • Your site postcode, ideally with a what3words or pin if it is a field or farm.
  • Start date and expected hire length.
  • Access details: lane width, gateway width, turning space and ground conditions.
  • Who will be on site to receive the delivery.

We aim to reply to WhatsApp messages within the hour during business hours. If a machine breaks down on site, call or WhatsApp us. We will assess it and arrange repair or replacement as quickly as we can, and we will be upfront about how long that takes in the far west.

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver plant hire to Penzance?

Yes. Plant hire Penzance deliveries come from our depot near Okehampton, about 85 miles away. We cover Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole, St Just, Marazion, Hayle and the rest of West Penwith. Ask about lead times when you book.

Can you deliver to Penzance the same day?

Same-day delivery is possible across much of Devon and Cornwall, but Penzance is at the far end of our area and we would rather not promise it. Give us a few days’ notice and we can plan a delivery that suits you.

What digger is best for stony West Cornwall ground?

It depends on the job, but a 2.5t to 3.5t machine such as the Sunward SWE 25UF or SWE 35UF has more digging force for stony ground than a micro digger, while still fitting most rural sites. For solid granite you may need a breaker. Ask us what is available.

Can I get a machine down a narrow Cornish lane?

Usually, yes, with the right machine and some planning. Tell us the narrowest point of the lane and the gateway width. Compact tracked kit such as the SWE 08B, tracked dumpers and the Tracspider are designed for tight access.

Is long-term hire better for a site in Penzance?

For jobs lasting more than a few weeks, often yes. Long-term rental includes on-site servicing, and Flex Hire lets you swap machines for a flat monthly fee. Both reduce the cost of repeated deliveries and collections over a long distance.

Do you hire storage for holiday let refurbishments?

Yes. The Hiway Storage BV126 trailer is sited on your drive, lockable and weatherproof, and we move it ourselves. It keeps furniture and fittings secure during building work.
