In this guide
This guide covers what we see most often in Mid Devon, how the ground behaves in the Exe and Culm valleys, which machines suit which jobs, and when a longer hire makes more sense than booking week by week.
Getting machines to Tiverton and Cullompton
Tiverton sits where the A361 North Devon Link Road meets the A396 Exe valley road, with junction 27 of the M5 a few miles to the east at Sampford Peverell. Cullompton has its own junction, 28. That road network is the reason Mid Devon works well for us: a low loader can come off the A30 at Exeter, run up the M5 and be at most business parks and farmyards around Tiverton without threading through miles of single-track lane.
The exceptions are the steep, narrow lanes up the Exe valley towards Bampton and the hill farms around Stoodleigh and Oakford. If your site is up one of those, tell us when you book. We may send a smaller machine on a plant trailer rather than a larger one on a lorry, or ask for a meeting point where the lane widens.
Same-day delivery is often possible across Devon, but it depends on what is already out on hire. For a planned job, a day or two of notice gives you the best chance of getting exactly the model you want.
Plant hire Tiverton jobs we see most often
Mid Devon is a mix of market town, commuter growth and working farmland, so the work varies a lot from one week to the next. The jobs that come up most around Tiverton are:
- Housing and extension groundworks. Foundations, drainage runs and service trenches on infill plots and new estates. A 1.8 to 3.5 tonne zero tail swing excavator plus a tracked dumper covers most of it.
- Business park and yard work. Resurfacing, kerb lines, drainage repairs and new hardstanding on industrial units around the town and along the M5 corridor. Compaction kit and a pavement saw do a lot of the work here.
- Farm buildings and yards. Footings for new sheds, clearing out old concrete, re-laying yards and digging drainage. The 6 tonne and 9 tonne Sunward machines and the Dragon crusher earn their keep on these.
- Cullompton growth. East of Cullompton is planned for large-scale housing under the Culm Garden Village programme, which brings steady demand from groundworkers and utility contractors on longer contracts.
- Land and estate work. Topping, ripping compacted fields, stone crushing on tracks and moving bales or feed with a telehandler.
Ground conditions in the Exe and Culm valleys
Much of the land around Tiverton and Cullompton sits on the red Permian sandstones and breccias that give this part of Devon its rust-coloured soil. It drains reasonably well and digs cleanly, but it sticks to tracks and buckets when wet and stains everything it touches. Bring something to clean down the road before the end of the day.
Closer to the rivers you will find softer alluvium and river gravels, and the water table can be high in winter. Trenches in the Exe floodplain may fill overnight, so plan for that rather than discovering it at 8am. West of the town towards the Culm Measures country the ground turns to heavier clay and shale, which holds water and gets greasy on slopes.
If you are digging close to the Exe, the Lowman or the Culm, check whether you need consent first. The Environment Agency explains when a flood risk activity permit is needed for work near a main river. As a rule of thumb, most activities within 8 metres of the bank of a non-tidal main river are covered, and for excavation the distance is 16 metres.
The Exe is a main river; for smaller streams, check the Environment Agency’s main river map, because an ordinary watercourse is consented by the county council instead. Check the current guidance before you start, as the rules are detailed.
Which machine for which Mid Devon job
This is a starting point, not a rulebook. Access, spoil volume and how deep you need to go all change the answer, so tell us about the job and we will suggest the right kit.
| Job | Suggested machine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Garden drainage, cable trench, small footings | Sunward SWE 18UF (1.8t) | Zero tail swing, fits through tight side access |
| Extension footings and drainage on a housing plot | Sunward SWE 25UF or SWE 35UF | More reach and breakout force, still compact |
| Farm shed footings, bulk dig, yard clearance | Sunward SWE 60UF or SWE 90UF | Moves volume quickly on open sites |
| Moving spoil across a soft site | Mechbadger or Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper | Tracks spread the load on wet red soil |
| Sub-base for yards and car parks | Weber MT CR 3-III or CR 7 reversible plate | Deep compaction on larger areas |
| Recycling old concrete from a yard | Dragon 400 or 450 tracked crusher | Turns demolition waste into usable hardcore |
| Ripping compacted fields | John Deere 6155R with Nardi FAST 3m ripper | Loosens subsoil after a wet season |
You can see the full digger, dumper and compaction range on our construction equipment hire page, and the tractors, implements and loaders on our agricultural equipment hire page.
Weekly hire, long-term rental or Flex Hire
Most plant hire Tiverton bookings are weekly, which suits a set of footings or a drainage run. But several of the projects around Cullompton and the M5 corridor run for months, and hiring the same excavator and dumper week after week on ad-hoc terms is rarely the best value.
Our long-term plant rental is designed for contracts of roughly four months or more. You agree the kit, the term and a monthly rate, routine servicing is included, and you get a named contact. If your work changes from job to job and you would rather swap machines as you go, Flex Hire gives you one flat monthly fee for a tier of equipment, starting at £795 +VAT and delivery per month for compact kit.
Checklist before your machine arrives
- Confirm the delivery point has firm ground and room for the lorry to turn or reverse.
- Check for buried services. Get utility plans and use a cable locator; HSE guidance HSG47 on avoiding underground services sets out a sensible approach.
- Make sure whoever operates the machine holds suitable training. Hire is self-drive unless we agree otherwise.
- Arrange insurance for hired-in plant. It is not automatically included, and we can point you to insurance4plant.co.uk if you need cover.
- Have someone on site to sign for the machine and check it over.
- Fuel up with white diesel (DERV) for any diesel machine, and return it full.
A planning timeline for a Mid Devon groundworks job
Most hire problems we see are timing problems: the digger turns up before the setting out is done, or the concrete wagon is booked for a day the trench is full of water. Working back from your start date avoids most of them.
- Three to four weeks before: confirm planning and building control are in place, order utility plans for the site, and check whether any permit or consent is needed near a watercourse. If you will dig within a few metres of a neighbour’s building, look at whether the Party Wall Act applies, as notice for excavation has to be served at least a month ahead.
- Two weeks before: WhatsApp us with the job, the site postcode, a photo of the access and rough dates. We can then hold the right size of excavator, dumper and compaction kit and plan the delivery vehicle.
- One week before: set out the dig, mark services with paint, and decide where spoil and topsoil will go. Book muck-away or arrange where surplus spoil will be spread on site.
- Two days before: confirm delivery time and the name and number of whoever will be on site. Check the forecast; if a wet week is coming, it may be better to slip the start by a day or two than fight a flooded trench.
- Delivery day: walk round the machine with our driver, check it over, note any existing marks and keep the delivery note.
- Finishing: call or WhatsApp to off-hire as soon as the work is done. Hire runs until the off-hire is confirmed, so do not wait for the collection lorry to arrive before telling us.
Worked example: a steel-framed shed base near Bampton
This is an illustrative scenario rather than a real job, but it is typical of what farms up the Exe valley ask us about. Picture an 18m by 12m general purpose shed on a sloping field edge, with pad foundations for the steel frame and a stone base ready for a concrete floor later.
- Strip and level: a Sunward SWE 60UF strips the topsoil into a separate bund and cuts the platform into the slope, working from the high side down. On the heavier ground west of Tiverton this goes faster with a 6 tonne machine than a 3.5 tonne one.
- Pad foundations: the same excavator digs the column pads to the engineer’s depth. A tracked dumper moves spoil to the low side so the platform does not get churned up.
- Stone base: crushed stone goes down in layers, each one compacted with a Weber MT CR 7 reversible plate. If there is old concrete from a demolished building on the farm, a Dragon crusher can turn it into hardcore for the lower layers first.
- Drainage: roof water from a building this size is a lot of water, so the gutter runs and the soakaway or ditch outfall are dug before the frame goes up.
A job like this usually suits one or two weeks of hire for the excavator and dumper, with the crusher booked in for a few days in the middle. If the shed is the first of several projects on the holding that year, compare that with a long-term or Flex Hire arrangement before you book.
Seasonal planning for plant hire Tiverton jobs
The weather in Mid Devon is milder than on Dartmoor, but the valley floors still get wet for months at a time. Plan the type of job around the season where you can.
| Season | Typical conditions | Good jobs to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Ground drying, high demand for diggers | Extension footings, garden landscaping, yard repairs. Book early. |
| Summer (June to August) | Driest ground, red soil can bake hard | Field drainage, bulk dig, ripping compacted fields after harvest, farm tracks |
| Autumn (September to November) | Rain returning, leaf fall | Finishing groundworks before winter, hedge and verge work from September, shed bases |
| Winter (December to February) | Saturated valley floors, short days | Indoor and yard work, concrete crushing on hardstanding, planned drainage repairs on firmer ground |
Remember that farm hedges in England cannot be cut or trimmed between 1 March and 31 August under the hedgerow management rules, with limited exceptions. If your project means trimming back a hedge for access, the GOV.UK hedgerow cutting guidance explains the dates and exemptions. Check the current guidance before you start.
What affects the cost of plant hire in Tiverton
We do not publish hire prices, because the right plant hire Tiverton quote depends on the job. WhatsApp us for a current quote, and it helps to know what moves the number up or down:
- Machine size and type. A 9 tonne excavator or tracked crusher costs more to hire and move than a 1.8 tonne digger.
- Hire length. Weekly rates work out better than daily, and monthly and long-term rates better again.
- Delivery distance and vehicle. Transport is priced by distance from our depot near Okehampton. A machine that needs a low loader costs more to deliver than one that travels on a plant trailer.
- Grouping items. An excavator, dumper and plate delivered together on one trip is cheaper than three separate runs.
- Weekend use. Hire runs continuously, and weekend use on a weekly hire may carry an extra charge, so tell us if you plan to work Saturdays.
- Fuel and cleaning. Machines go out full of white diesel and should come back full and reasonably clean. Red Mid Devon mud left caked on tracks can mean a cleaning charge.
- Insurance. Cover for hired-in plant is your responsibility and is not included in the hire.
Questions to ask before you book
A five-minute conversation before the machine leaves the yard saves a lot of wasted days. These are the questions worth asking us, or yourself, before any plant hire Tiverton booking:
- Will it fit? Measure the narrowest gate, passage or gap between the road and the dig, and check for overhead cables and low branches on the route in.
- Will it reach? Tell us the trench depth and how far the spoil has to be thrown or carried. A machine that is slightly too small can double the time a job takes.
- Which bucket? A narrow trenching bucket for drainage, a wider digging bucket for bulk work, a grading bucket for levelling. Ask what comes with the machine.
- Where will spoil go? Red Mid Devon soil bulks up once dug. Plan for more volume than the hole you dig, and keep heaps back from trench edges.
- Who is operating? Hire is self-drive. The operator needs suitable training, and if they are an employee, their employer has a legal duty under PUWER to make sure they are trained for the machine.
- What happens if it rains for a week? Ask about extending the hire and how off-hire works, so you are not paying for a machine parked in a flooded field.
If you are unsure on any of these, send us photos and a rough sketch of the site. It is the quickest way to get a clear recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Can you deliver to Tiverton the same day?
Often, yes, if the machine is in the yard. Mid Devon is well connected by the M5 and A361, so it is one of the easier areas for us to reach quickly. Message us early in the day for the best chance.
Do you cover Bampton, Uffculme and Willand?
Yes. We deliver across the whole of Mid Devon and into West Somerset. For hill farms up narrow lanes, give us access details so we can send the right vehicle.
Can I hire an excavator with an operator?
Hire is self-drive as standard, so you or your operator need the right training. If you need an operated machine, ask us and we will tell you what we can arrange.
What is the minimum hire period?
Usually one day. Weekly hire is the most popular for groundworks, and monthly or long-term rates apply for longer projects.
Do you deliver to the business parks along the M5 near Tiverton and Cullompton?
Yes. Industrial units around junctions 27 and 28 are among our more straightforward deliveries. Tell us about delivery windows, gate codes and where the lorry can unload.
Can I hire a tractor and ripper for a few days after harvest?
Yes. The John Deere 6155R with the Nardi FAST 3m ripper is often hired for a few days in late summer when the ground is dry enough to fracture properly. Book ahead, as that window is short.
Do I need a permit to dig near the River Exe?
Possibly. Excavation within 16 metres of a main river such as the Exe is likely to need a flood risk activity permit from the Environment Agency. Check the current guidance before the machine arrives.
