Mini digger hire Bude jobs have a character of their own. Sandy ground near the beaches, salt in the air, holiday lets that need work done between bookings, and drainage that behaves very differently on the coast than a few miles inland. We deliver mini diggers to Bude and North Cornwall from our Okehampton depot, about 30 miles away via Holsworthy. This guide covers machine choice, digging in sand, drainage on coastal plots and how to look after a machine exposed to salt.

Mini digger hire Bude: which machine for coastal plots
Most domestic and holiday property work around Bude suits one of three Sunward machines.
| Machine | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sunward SWE 08B (0.8t) | Gardens, patios, hot tub bases, narrow side access | Light on lawns, easy to trailer |
| Sunward SWE 18UF (1.8t) | Soakaways, drainage runs, extension footings | Zero tail swing for digging next to walls |
| Sunward SWE 25UF (2.5t) | Driveways, larger drainage schemes, site clearance | Needs wider access and firmer ground |
The Sunward SWE 08B is the machine we suggest most for holiday cottages and bungalows with small gardens. It gets through a garden gate, does not tear up the lawn, and is light enough to move on one of our smaller plant trailers. For bigger jobs, see the full range on our construction equipment page.
Hot tub bases, garden rooms and decking
A lot of holiday let upgrades around Bude are about outdoor space: a hot tub on a level concrete base, a garden room, or decking with a view of the sea. These are ideal micro digger jobs. The SWE 08B digs out and levels the base area, a Weber MT CF 1-III Hd or CF 2-II Hd plate compacts the sub-base, and an Altrad Belle Mini Mix 150 handles small concrete pours.
For a hot tub, check the base design with the supplier, as a filled tub is very heavy, and plan the electrical supply route before you lay anything. A short trench for a cable duct is far easier to dig while the machine is on site than afterwards.
Digging in sand: keep trenches safe
Close to the beaches at Summerleaze, Crooklets and Widemouth, and on parts of the town built on blown sand, the ground digs very easily. That is the problem. Dry sand runs, wet sand slumps, and an unsupported trench can collapse without warning.
- Never enter an unsupported trench. HSE’s excavation guidance says supports should be decided before digging starts, and that sides can be battered back to a safe angle instead. Sandy or wet ground needs a much flatter angle.
- Keep the machine and spoil back from the edge. Parking plant or heaping spoil near the trench adds load and makes collapse more likely.
- Inspect at the start of each shift and after heavy rain, as HSE advises.
- Dig and backfill quickly. In running sand, open only as much trench as you can finish that day.
Inland, around Stratton, Kilkhampton and Marhamchurch, the ground is generally heavier and wetter, with shale and clay over the local rock. Same machine, very different digging.
Bude’s ground in more detail
The cliffs around Bude show the local bedrock clearly: folded layers of sandstone and shale that weather into a clayey, stony soil inland. On many plots you get topsoil, then a sticky clay-rich subsoil, then broken rock that a micro digger can pick at but a 1.8 or 2.5 tonne machine handles much more easily. Near the beaches and the canal, blown sand and alluvium can be several metres deep. If your plot sits between the two, expect the ground to change across a single garden, and dig a trial hole before you choose a machine.
Drainage on coastal sites
Drainage is one of the most common reasons people hire a mini digger in Bude. The approach depends on what is under your plot.
Soakaways in sandy ground
Free-draining sand can make soakaways work well, but check the groundwater level first. Near the coast and the River Neet, the water table can be high in winter, which leaves a soakaway full of water. Dig a test hole and watch it after rain.
Clay and shale inland
On heavier ground a soakaway may not drain at all. Land drains to a ditch or other outfall are often the better answer, but check you have the right to discharge there.
Holiday let septic tanks and treatment plants
Replacing or upgrading a septic tank or package treatment plant is a common winter job on rural holiday lets. These systems come with specific Environment Agency rules on discharges. For example, under the general binding rules for discharges to surface water, a septic tank must not discharge directly to a watercourse, so check the current guidance before you change anything. A 1.8 or 2.5 tonne machine is usually enough for the excavation.
Timing work around holiday lets
Many properties in and around Bude are holiday cottages and second homes. Owners usually want groundwork done when there are no guests, which in practice often means between autumn and spring.
- Plan the job around your booking calendar and leave time for weather delays.
- Book the digger 24 to 48 hours ahead, or earlier for a specific week.
- Line up materials and waste removal so the machine is not standing idle.
- Reinstate lawns and paths before the next guests arrive. A Weber MT plate compactor helps with paths and patio bases.
- Off-hire as soon as you finish, as charges run until off-hire is confirmed.
Salt exposure: wash the machine down
Salt spray and sand get everywhere on the coast, and they are hard on steel, rams, pins and electrics. Treat the machine as you would a car after a beach car park.
- Rinse the machine with fresh water at the end of each working day if it has been near the sea or in sand.
- Pay attention to tracks, rollers, the bucket linkage and around the rams.
- Do not blast high pressure directly at electrical components, seals or the radiator.
- Return the machine clean. Equipment returned dirty may be cleaned at the hirer’s expense.
If you do not have a hose or pressure washer handy, we hire the Brendon 35KPE mobile power washer.
Sand is the other enemy. It packs into tracks and rollers, gets into the grease on pivot pins and works its way under covers. Clear packed sand out of the undercarriage at the end of each day, grease the pins as part of your daily checks, and tell us if anything starts to sound or feel different. On a mini digger hire Bude job close to the beach, a few minutes of care each evening keeps the machine working properly and avoids cleaning charges at the end of the hire.
Moving spoil and materials on small plots
Coastal bungalows and cottages often have small gardens with no room for a skip close to the dig. Moving spoil out and stone in can take longer than the digging.
- Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper. Narrow and tracked, so it copes with soft sand and fits through garden gates.
- Tracspider 1000kg electric bed carrier. Quiet and zero emission, which helps when neighbouring cottages have guests in.
- Altrad Belle mixers. For small concrete pours such as hot tub bases and fence posts.
Tell us how far the spoil has to travel and through what width, and we will suggest a pairing.
Towing a mini digger to Bude yourself
Some customers prefer to collect and tow. The SWE 08B sits comfortably on our Brian James 9ft plant trailer (2,700kg GVW, 9ft × 4ft 4in), and the Indespension 10ft trailer with ramps suits slightly bigger kit. Both are on our trailers page. Check your vehicle’s towing limit and your licence before setting off.
The GOV.UK guide to towing with a car covers licence rules. If you passed your car test from 1 January 1997, it says you can usually tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass, but your vehicle’s own towing limit may be lower, so check both before you load up.
The route from Okehampton via Holsworthy is mostly A-road, but the last stretch to some coastal properties is narrow. Take it steady.
Worked example: a soakaway and patio for a holiday cottage
This is an illustrative scenario, not a real customer. A holiday cottage a couple of miles inland from Bude has a patio that floods every time it rains hard, because the roof water from a new extension discharges onto it. The owner wants a soakaway for the roof water and a new patio laid to a proper fall, all done in the gap between the October half term and the Christmas bookings.
Test the ground first
Before digging a full soakaway, dig a test hole where it will go, fill it with water and see how quickly it drains. If it barely moves, as is common on clay and shale inland, a soakaway will not cope and you will need another solution, such as a drain to a ditch or watercourse if you have the right to discharge there. Building control can tell you what test and design they will expect for your site, and the size of the soakaway depends on the roof area and how quickly the ground drains.
The hire plan
- Sunward SWE 18UF for the soakaway pit, the pipe trench from the downpipe and breaking out the old patio. Zero tail swing helps beside the cottage wall.
- Hyundai 500kg tracked dumper to move spoil and old slabs out to a skip on the drive.
- Weber MT CF 2-II Hd plate compactor for the patio sub-base, compacted in layers.
- Altrad Belle mixer for the mortar bed.
Sequence
- Locate drains and cables, then mark the soakaway at a sensible distance from the building, as building control will advise.
- Dig the soakaway and the pipe trench, install the soakaway units or rubble fill, and connect the downpipe.
- Break out the old patio and reduce the level so the new one falls away from the house.
- Lay and compact the sub-base, then lay the slabs.
- Rinse the machines down, reinstate the lawn and off-hire.
With materials lined up in advance, a week covers this comfortably, leaving a few days before the next guests arrive.
Coastal planning and access constraints
Much of the coast around Bude is protected landscape, and that can affect what you are allowed to do, particularly on larger projects or on land outside the town.
- Cornwall National Landscape. Large parts of the Cornish coast, including stretches near Bude, are within the Cornwall National Landscape, the new name since 2023 for what was the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Planning policy is stricter inside it, so check with Cornwall Council before any significant building or landscaping work.
- The coast path. The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs either side of Bude. Do not block or damage it, keep plant well back from cliff edges, and fence off any work next to the path.
- Cliff-top and dune properties. Ground near cliffs and dunes can be unstable. Avoid heavy machines and spoil heaps close to the edge, and take specialist advice before digging anything deep near a slope.
- Watercourses. The River Neet and the Bude Canal run through the town. Work close to a main river or flood defence may need an Environment Agency permit, so check before you dig near the water.
This is general information only. Rules change, so check the current position before you start.
Mini digger hire Bude: a booking timeline for out-of-season work
Holiday property owners and the builders who work for them tend to want the same weeks, so the quieter months fill up. Planning back from your guest calendar helps.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| During the summer season | Decide on the work, get any drawings, consents and building control sorted, and book your builder |
| Four to six weeks before | Order materials, book skips, and confirm the machine and dates with us |
| One week before | Send access photos and measurements, and confirm where the lorry can unload |
| Day before | Clear the route, protect lawns and paths, tell neighbouring cottages when the lorry is due |
| Last day of work | Rinse the machine, reinstate the garden and off-hire straight away |
Weekly hire is usually the right period for this kind of job, as it absorbs the inevitable wet day. If you manage several properties and have a run of jobs over the winter, ask about Flex Hire, which lets you swap kit between jobs on one flat monthly fee.
Delivering to coastal properties
The route from our depot near Okehampton to Bude runs through Holsworthy, and the main roads are straightforward. The challenges start in the last mile.
- Narrow lanes. Many cottages and farms around Bude, Marhamchurch, Poundstock and Kilkhampton are reached by single-track lanes with high Cornish hedges and few passing places. Tell us if there are tight bends, low branches or weight-limited bridges.
- Summer traffic. The A39 and the roads into town get busy in the school holidays, and seafront car parks are not places to unload a machine. Out-of-season deliveries are far easier.
- Parking in town. Streets near the beaches and the town centre have limited parking. Tell us where the lorry can safely stop, and arrange permission in advance for anything that needs to stay on the road.
- Soft ground at the drop. Sandy drives and wet lawns are not ideal for unloading a tracked machine. A firm, level spot avoids problems, and abortive delivery costs caused by poor access fall to the hirer under our terms.
If the final stretch is too tight for a lorry, towing the machine yourself on one of our smaller plant trailers can be the answer.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly can you deliver a mini digger to Bude?
Same-day delivery is possible across most of Cornwall, subject to availability. Booking a day or two ahead gives you the best chance of the machine you want.
Can a micro digger dig a soakaway?
Yes, for most domestic soakaways. The SWE 08B handles small ones; for deeper or larger soakaways a 1.8 tonne machine is quicker.
Do I need to wash the digger before returning it?
Yes, please return it clean. On the coast that means a freshwater rinse to remove salt and sand.
What does the cost of a mini digger hire depend on?
Mainly the machine, the hire period and the delivery distance from our depot near Okehampton. Dumpers, compactors and trailers add to the total, and fuel or cleaning charges apply if the machine comes back empty or covered in sand. WhatsApp us for a current quote.
Will a soakaway work on my Bude property?
It depends on the ground. Free-draining sand near the coast often works well unless the water table is high, while clay and shale inland may barely drain at all. Dig a test hole and check with building control before committing.
Can I work near the coast path or a cliff edge?
Keep machines and spoil well back from cliff edges, never block the path and take specialist advice before digging near unstable ground. Larger projects may need planning consent in the Cornwall National Landscape.
Is mini digger hire Bude delivery possible in the summer holidays?
Yes, subject to availability, but traffic and parking make it harder. Book early, give us clear details of the unloading spot and allow extra time for the journey.
